Four predictions for email marketing that won’t come true in 2016

For the last three years, I’ve made predictions about various aspects of online marketing (see here for 2015 and 2014.) They’re mostly right, except for most of them.

This year, instead of soothsaying, let’s focus on things I wish would happen... but likely won’t.

So here’s some predictions for email marketing that won’t come true in 2016.

Eagle-eyed Econsultancy readers will notice that we’ve published a number of end-of-year roundups recently.

For each of these posts we asked a panel of experts for their views, and while I had their attention I slipped in a few extra questions.

It’s basically Christmas already, so it’s time to look back at 2015 and mull over what’s occurred in digital marketing.

As marketers, do we really understand interruption?

I was reading an excellent article about the slow uptake of iBeacons when I became almost lucid, and started to see digital as the CFO sees it.

The power of digital technology can blind marketers to the simple question of 'will the customer use it?'

Too often, marketing technology is interruptive, based on providing value for the business but wish-washy engagement for the customer.

Six ways to maximise the impact of your content marketing

A lot goes into creating that perfect piece of content.

With so many brands now recognising the importance of producing regular, fresh, and high quality content though, it can sometimes feel like you’re simply churning out great work that gets forgotten the very next day.

What’s the best Black Friday subject line ever according to 3,892 emails?

This week, your inbox is probably filled with Black Friday emails. And they’re all pretty much the same. “20% off now!” or “Don’t miss out!” or “Buy this TV or else I’ll club this baby seal!”

And since every retailer seems to follow the same approach, everyone else follows suit.

You don’t want to be that one brand that misses out on one of the biggest shopping days of the year.

Five external factors that can impact your email campaigns

The Festival of Marketing has finally arrived! I’ve already attended three fantastic talks, one of which came from the almighty Alan ‘not-so-marketer-friendly-but-still-full-of-sound-advice’ Sugar.

But one of the most interesting talks I’ve seen so far was on the Data and Analytics stage, where Return Path’s senior director of professional services Guy Hanson discussed how external factors can have a big impact on email marketing campaigns.

Why exclusivity is the cherry on the customer experience cake

In June 2015 the ONS reported that average store prices in the UK fell by almost 3% YoY.

This was the 12th successive month of deflation in the retail sector.

Alongside deflation, quarterly measures of retail activity have been growing for four years.
