Analyst group Gartner has included mashups, Ajax and other elements of Web 2.0 in a report that predicts which key technologies are likely to impact on businesses over the next decade.

The firm’s 2006 Hype Cycle for Emerging Technologies study, which identifies themes that are gaining the most attention and assesses their likely effect on business, says companies should look at how consumers have adopted Web 2.0 trends and see how they can improve their performance.

‘High impact’ technologies, according to Gartner, include social network analysis (SNA), the use of people’s information and knowledge through personal networks, which the analyst group says enterprises could use to identify target markets, create successful project teams and identify ‘unvoiced conclusions’.

Gartner rated SNA, as well as Ajax, (a collection of techniques that developers use to deliver an enhanced, more-responsive user experience in web applications), as capable of reaching maturity in less than two years.

The company also said collective intelligence techniques would have a ‘transformational effect’ by giving  firms new ways of doing business across industries , while mashups would hit mainstream adoption in the same timeframe.

Gartner also predicted that ‘real world web’ technologies such as GPS and mobile network-based location-aware applications would achieve widespread uptake in the next two to five years.

E-consultancy believes that Ajax in particular has already 'matured' to a point where it can be rolled out by established web businesses, to improve interfaces and the user experience.

Meanwhile, location-based services were meant to have been widely adopted by 2006, according to previous research by firms including Gartner (which in 2003 predicted that LBS would be an industry worth more than $26bn by 2007). We see this one is a bit of a dead duck. Where are all these location-based services? And why aren't they all over our mobile phones?
